Applying for the Best Start Grant School Age Payment

DEADLINE TO APPLY: Application has passed for 2021

If you have a child soon to be starting primary school, and you currently receive certain benefits, then you may be eligible for a one-off payment from the Scottish Government. The Best Start Grant School Age Payment is to help make sure your child starts school on the right foot.

It can be used for anything your child might need for when starting school. This could be notebooks, pencils, a warm coat or a schoolbag. The grant you will receive is £250 for each eligible child. Apply here.

When to apply

You need to apply within a certain time to ensure you receive this grant. The deadline for those starting school in 2021 is the 28th February.

Here are the deadline dates for applying to the School Age Grant payment:

If your child’s date of birth is between 1 March 2015 and 29 February 2016, you can apply between 1 June 2020 and 28 February 2021.

If your child’s date of birth is between 1 March 2016 and 28 February 2017, you can apply between 1 June 2021 and 28 February 2022.

How to apply for the Best Start Grant

Applying for the grant can be done online. Visit the Scottish Government website to start. Any parent under 18 years of age does not need to be on any benefits to receive a Best Start Grant. However, parents or carers over this age will need to be receiving one or more certain benefits to do so. They are:

  • Universal Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

If you have just applied to one or more of these grants, you can still apply for a Best Start Grant School Age Payment. So if you are wondering if you can you get a clothing grant on Universal Credit, then yes you can.

It’s important to know that even if you have deferred your child’s school start until 2022, or if they are not going to start school at all, you should still apply by the 28 February 2021. If you don’t, then you will not be able to receive the School Age Grant.
