Homelessness is a serious issue in Scotland. It affects hundreds of families and individuals each year, and has a damaging effect on mental health. In a recent report by Citizens Advice Scotland’s housing spokesperson Aoife Deery, it was revealed that the Citizens Advice network provided more than 58,000 pieces of advice on housing in 2023, a 10% rise compared to the year before. With the problem increasing, here are some ways you can protect yourself from becoming homeless in Scotland. And if you have any queries, doubts or concerns, be sure to speak to one of our advisors at the East Dunbartonshire Citizens Advice Bureau and we can help you find solutions.
If you have already found yourself homeless, then please see our guide for what to do next here.
Act early
One of the most important things you can do to stop yourself from becoming homeless in Scotland is to act as son as you think it is a possibility. This means seeking advice from us as soon as possible. The sooner you seek our advice, the more options you will have. So, if you are behind with your rent or mortgage payments or your landlord is asking you to vacant your home, speak to us ASAP and we can help find you the right people to speak to for help.
Know your rights
If you are well-prepared and know your own rights, you can better understand the options open to you and the problems you might have to overcome. The Housing (Scotland) Act 2001 contains information on where you stand as a homeowner or renter in Scotland. If you are at risk of homelessness, it’s important to know that local authorities have a duty to provide help. And remember, if you are served an eviction notice you still have rights. Speak to us as soon as possible to find out what support is available to you.
Apply for financial help
If you’re struggling financially, then you are not on your own. The cost of living crisis has hit many families and individuals throughout East Dunbartonshire hard, even those who never thought they would be in such a situation in East Dunbartonshire. Either with our help or on your own you can explore the types of financial help available, like Universal Credit. Read more about what benefits you may be entitled to here.
Help is available if you are in rent or mortgage arrears
If you’re falling behind on rent or mortgage payments, our advice remains the same – act sooner rather than later. If you are behind with your mortgage, speak to your mortgage provider as soon as possible. They have a number of ways to help you, including taking a payment break until your finances are stable again. Don’t wait for them to contact you – get ahead of the problem. Find out more about what to do with mortgage payment problems here. Ignoring the problem could lead to eviction or repossession.
Similarly, get in touch with your landlord if you are falling behind with rent. They might agree to a payment plan to help you with your situation.
Don’t wait until it’s too late
Becoming homeless in Scotland can be prevented if you seek advice soon enough. This gives you time to speak to anyone who you might owe debts to, and apply for funding support to help cover the gap.
